Zippo Fuel, Flints & Wicks – Complete Guide to Looking After Your Zippo Lighter
Zippo Fuel, Flints & Wicks – Complete Guide to Looking After Your Zippo Lighter
One of the biggest advantages of owning a Zippo lighter is its reusable design. When the fuel runs out or a component eventually wears down, you don’t need to throw the lighter away. Simply refill it or replace the relevant part and carry on using it.
Three components play a particularly important role in a traditional Zippo windproof lighter: Zippo lighter fuel, Zippo flints and Zippo wicks.
If your Zippo has become difficult to light, the flame seems weaker than usual or you simply want to know how to maintain it correctly, this guide covers the basics.
At Dancing Flame, we stock genuine Zippo lighters, accessories and maintenance products here in the UK. We hold the stock shown as available on our website ourselves rather than using dropshipping suppliers.
What Does a Zippo Lighter Need to Work?
The traditional Zippo windproof lighter uses a remarkably simple mechanical design.
Its main components include:
- Zippo lighter fuel
- A Zippo flint
- A Zippo wick
- A flint wheel
- Fuel-absorbing packing inside the insert
When you rotate the flint wheel with your thumb, the wheel strikes against the flint and creates sparks. Those sparks ignite fuel vapour around the wick, producing the familiar Zippo flame.
Because you can replace the main consumable components, maintaining a Zippo is straightforward.
Rather than replacing the complete lighter when something wears out, you can usually solve the problem with a small maintenance job.
Zippo Lighter Fuel
Traditional Zippo windproof lighters use liquid lighter fuel rather than butane gas.
The packing material inside the insert absorbs the liquid fuel. The wick passes through this material and draws the fuel upwards towards the chimney.
When the flint creates a spark, fuel vapour surrounding the wick ignites and produces the flame.
For reliable performance, we recommend using genuine Zippo lighter fuel in a traditional Zippo windproof lighter.
Using the correct fuel helps your lighter ignite consistently and perform as intended.
How Do You Refill a Zippo Lighter?
Refilling a traditional Zippo only takes a few minutes, although you should always handle lighter fuel carefully.
Keep the lighter and fuel away from naked flames, heat and other ignition sources while refilling.
Start by pulling the lighter insert out of the outer Zippo case.
Turn the insert upside down and gently lift the felt pad on its base. Underneath, you’ll find the packing material that holds the fuel.
Slowly add Zippo lighter fuel to the packing.
Take your time rather than pouring a large amount in at once. This allows the packing material to absorb the liquid properly and reduces the chance of spilling fuel.
Once you’ve added enough fuel, return the felt pad to its normal position.
Wipe any excess fuel from the insert, outer case and your hands before putting the insert back into the lighter.
Allow any accidentally spilled fuel to evaporate completely before trying to light your Zippo.
How Often Should You Refill a Zippo?
There’s no fixed refill schedule because every owner uses their lighter differently.
Someone who uses a Zippo regularly will naturally need to refill it more frequently than an occasional user.
Storage also makes a difference.
Traditional Zippo fuel gradually evaporates because the classic windproof insert doesn’t use a completely sealed fuel reservoir.
That evaporation is normal.
If you leave your lighter unused for several weeks and later find that it won’t light, don’t immediately assume something has broken.
First, check the fuel.
A simple refill may solve the problem.
What Do Zippo Flints Do?
The Zippo flint may be tiny, but it performs one of the most important jobs in the lighter.
Without a working flint, a traditional Zippo can’t produce the spark needed to ignite its fuel.
The flint sits inside a narrow tube underneath the flint wheel.
A spring keeps pressure on the flint and pushes it upwards towards the wheel. Each time you rotate the wheel, it scrapes across the flint and creates sparks.
Every strike removes a tiny amount of material from the flint.
Eventually, the flint wears down and needs replacing.
How Do You Know When a Zippo Flint Needs Replacing?
Poor sparking usually provides the first clue.
If your lighter contains fuel but the flint wheel produces very few sparks, check the flint.
A completely worn flint may produce no spark at all.
Fortunately, replacing one costs very little and takes only a few minutes.
Zippo flints also take up hardly any space, so regular Zippo users often keep a spare pack nearby.
How to Replace a Zippo Flint
Start by removing the insert from the outer lighter case.
Look at the bottom of the insert and find the flint spring screw.
Carefully unscrew it.
The screw connects to a long spring, so pull the complete spring assembly out slowly.
Next, turn the insert over and allow the old flint to fall out of the tube.
If the flint has completely worn away, you might find very little material remaining.
Drop a new Zippo flint into the empty flint tube.
Replace the spring assembly and gently screw it back into position.
Once everything is secure, turn the flint wheel several times.
A fresh flint sometimes needs a few strikes before it settles properly against the wheel. You should then see a good shower of sparks.
What Does a Zippo Wick Do?
The Zippo wick carries fuel from the packing material inside the insert towards the lighter’s chimney.
Fuel travels along the wick and creates vapour around the exposed section at the top.
The spark from the flint then ignites that vapour.
Unlike fuel and flints, you won’t normally need to replace a Zippo wick very often.
In many cases, a blackened wick simply needs a little maintenance rather than complete replacement.
When Should You Trim a Zippo Wick?
The visible section of a wick gradually becomes dark and charred with regular use.
A little discolouration doesn’t automatically mean that you need a new wick.
However, if the exposed section has become heavily burnt and your lighter no longer performs as well as it once did, trimming can help.
Use tweezers or small pliers to gently pull a small amount of wick upwards.
Stop when a cleaner section appears.
Carefully trim away the burnt portion so the remaining wick sits approximately level with the top of the chimney.
Avoid pulling out or cutting more wick than necessary.
Each time you trim it, you reduce the amount remaining inside the insert.
Eventually, you won’t have enough wick left to pull upwards. At that stage, replace it.
How to Replace a Zippo Wick
Changing a Zippo wick involves a few more steps than changing a flint, but the process remains relatively simple.
First, remove the insert from the case.
Make sure you’re working well away from flames and ignition sources.
Remove the flint spring from underneath the insert, then lift the felt pad.
Carefully take out the internal packing material.
Pay attention to how it sits inside the insert because you’ll need to put it back afterwards.
Once you’ve removed enough packing, pull the old wick out through the top of the chimney.
Feed the new Zippo wick down through the chimney and into the body of the insert.
Don’t simply run the wick straight down one side.
Instead, weave it backwards and forwards between the layers of packing as you return the material to the insert.
This arrangement helps keep the wick in contact with the fuel-soaked packing.
After replacing the packing, return the felt pad and flint spring to their original positions.
Add fuel and allow a little time for the new wick to absorb it before lighting the Zippo.
My Zippo Won’t Light – What Should I Check?
If your Zippo suddenly stops working, don’t immediately assume the lighter has developed a serious fault.
The simple mechanical design makes troubleshooting relatively easy.
Start by checking three things:
1. Does the lighter have fuel?
Spin the wheel.
If you’re getting plenty of sparks but no flame, the lighter may simply need more fuel.
2. Is the flint producing a good spark?
Look closely when you turn the wheel.
Weak or non-existent sparks may indicate a worn flint.
Installing a fresh flint will often solve the issue immediately.
3. What condition is the wick in?
A lighter that contains fuel and produces sparks but still struggles to ignite may have a heavily charred wick.
Try exposing and trimming a fresh section.
If there isn’t enough wick left to trim, fit a replacement.
Checking fuel, flint and wick first will solve many common Zippo lighting problems.
Why Use Genuine Zippo Fuel, Flints and Wicks?
Genuine Zippo consumables are designed specifically for use with Zippo products.
If you’ve invested in a genuine Zippo lighter, using the manufacturer’s maintenance products makes sense.
At Dancing Flame, you’ll find Zippo lighter fuel, Zippo flints, Zippo wicks and other Zippo accessories alongside our range of lighters.
You can therefore order replacement consumables when purchasing a new Zippo or stock up on spares for lighters you already own.
We also carry Zippo inserts, giving owners additional options for selected compatible Zippo cases.
Different insert types can provide alternative flame styles while allowing you to continue using the classic outer case.
Keep a Few Zippo Spares at Home
Regular Zippo users may find it useful to keep basic maintenance products available.
A pack of spare flints takes up virtually no space.
Keeping lighter fuel at home also means you can refill your Zippo as soon as it runs dry.
You probably won’t need a replacement wick as often, but having one ready can save time when the original eventually reaches the end of its usable life.
For most owners, a small maintenance supply containing Zippo fuel, replacement flints and a spare wick covers the essentials.
Looking After Your Zippo Lighter
One of the things that makes a traditional Zippo appealing is its serviceable design.
You can maintain it rather than replacing the entire lighter.
Refill the fuel when it runs low.
Fit a fresh flint when the old one stops producing a strong spark.
Trim the wick when the exposed section becomes heavily charred, then replace it once it becomes too short.
Those simple jobs can keep a traditional Zippo performing reliably for years.
It’s part of the reason these lighters remain popular with everyday users, gift buyers and collectors around the world.
