One of the questions I get asked quite regularly is whether some of the unusual Zippo lighters I sell are actually made by Zippo themselves. This is especially true when people see some of the amazing Japanese customised Zippo lighters that feature incredible artwork, 3D designs and detailed finishes.

The simple answer is that the lighter itself starts life as a genuine Zippo lighter. However, many of the customised designs are created by specialist companies that have been authorised to carry out this work.

As I have built Dancing Flame, I have become increasingly interested in the Japanese and Asian Zippo markets because they often offer designs and finishes that we simply do not see in the UK.

What many collectors do not realise is that Zippo has long allowed authorised processors in Asia to customise genuine Zippo lighters. These companies purchase genuine Zippo lighters and then apply their own unique designs and manufacturing techniques to create something completely different.

This is one of the reasons Japanese customised Zippo lighters are so popular with collectors. You are not just buying a standard lighter with a printed image on it. In many cases, a significant amount of craftsmanship has gone into creating the finished product.

The Harry Potter Zippo lighter that first got me asking questions is a perfect example. It started as a genuine Zippo lighter before being redesigned and customised by a licensed workshop. The process involved creating a design, producing a prototype and then manufacturing the finished lighter.

What fascinates me most is the sheer variety of techniques used. Depending on the studio involved, the manufacturing process may include surface engraving, fine carving, three-dimensional artwork, gold inlay, silver plating, electroplating, polishing, antiquing treatments, Chinese lacquer work and precision stamping.

Each workshop tends to develop its own style and speciality. Some focus on deep engraving and metalwork, while others specialise in decorative finishes or intricate artwork. This means that two customised Zippo lighters can look completely different even though they both started as genuine Zippo products.

Another interesting fact is that there are specialist customisation workshops operating within the Asian market that are licensed to produce these designs. Many collectors are surprised to learn that an entire industry exists around creating customised genuine Zippo lighters.

For collectors, this is what makes Japanese customised Zippo lighters so appealing. They combine the reliability and quality of a genuine Zippo lighter with unique craftsmanship that is rarely seen on standard production models.

Personally, I find these lighters some of the most interesting items in my collection. They often feature levels of detail that are difficult to appreciate until you hold them in your hand. Photographs rarely do them justice.
