What Makes Gothic & Fantasy Zippo Lighters So Collectable?

Gothic and Fantasy Zippo lighters featuring skull, dragon, wolf and dark fantasy designs from Dancing Flame UK

Some Zippo lighters are designed to be simple and understated. Others are made to get noticed.

Gothic and Fantasy Zippo lighters definitely belong in the second group.

Skulls, dragons, wolves, mythical creatures, dark artwork and elaborate designs have appeared on countless Zippo lighters over the years. Combined with the famous metal case and windproof flame, these themes seem completely at home on a Zippo.

At Dancing Flame, we’ve brought many of these designs together in our Gothic & Fantasy Zippo Lighters collection.

Whether you’re a collector, looking for an unusual gift or simply want a Zippo that’s very different from a plain chrome lighter, there’s a huge variety to discover.

Why Do Gothic Designs Work So Well on Zippo Lighters?

There’s something about the traditional Zippo lighter that suits Gothic artwork.

Perhaps it’s the combination of metal and flame.

Perhaps it’s the history behind the lighter.

Or maybe it’s simply because the classic rectangular Zippo case provides such a good canvas for detailed artwork.

Whatever the reason, Gothic designs and Zippos have long gone hand in hand.

Skulls, skeletons, dragons, wings, crosses, ravens, roses and flames can all transform the familiar Zippo shape into something completely different.

Some designs are dark and subtle. Others are incredibly detailed.

Then there are those that sit somewhere between Gothic art, fantasy, biker culture and rock imagery.

That’s exactly what makes this area of Zippo collecting so interesting.

Skull Zippo Lighters – A Genuine Classic

If there is one image that immediately comes to mind when you think about Gothic Zippo lighters, it’s probably the skull.

Our Skull Zippo Lighters collection includes a wide variety of interpretations of this classic theme.

Some feature a single skull as the centrepiece. Others combine skulls with flames, roses, wings, crosses or elaborate backgrounds.

Even the finish of the lighter can dramatically change the appearance.

Put similar artwork on polished chrome, black matte or an aged-looking finish and you can end up with three very different lighters.

That’s one reason skull Zippos can become a collection in their own right.

They’re also popular well beyond traditional Zippo collectors. Bikers, rock and metal fans and people interested in Gothic artwork are naturally drawn to them too.

Dragon Zippo Lighters – Fire Meets Fire

It would be difficult to find a more appropriate creature to put on a lighter than a dragon.

Dragons have been associated with fire, strength and power for centuries.

Put one on a Zippo and the connection is obvious.

Dragon Zippo lighters range from relatively simple designs to elaborate fantasy scenes filled with colour and detail.

Some of the most impressive examples can also be found among Zippo’s 540 Colour Lighters, where artwork can wrap around almost the entire lighter.

Wolves and the Darker Side of Nature

Not everything within the Gothic and Fantasy world needs to involve skulls and monsters.

Wolf Zippo lighters are a perfect example.

Wolves regularly appear alongside forests, mountains and full moons, producing some extremely atmospheric artwork.

If that’s more your style, have a look through our dedicated Wolf Zippo Lighters collection.

These designs often sit somewhere between wildlife, fantasy and Gothic imagery.

Someone who doesn’t particularly want a skull lighter might love the look of a wolf beneath a full moon. It still has that darker atmosphere without being overtly Gothic.

Beyond Skulls and Dragons

The variety doesn’t stop there.

Fantasy gives Zippo designers an almost unlimited range of possibilities.

Depending on what has been produced and what we currently have available, you can find designs influenced by mythical creatures, winged figures, supernatural imagery, folklore and elaborate fantasy artwork.

There can also be a crossover between several styles.

A lighter may contain a dragon but also have strong Gothic influences. Another might combine a skull with fantasy artwork.

Trying to put every Zippo into one very narrow category doesn’t always work.

We’d rather make it easier to browse, which is why our Gothic & Fantasy Zippo collection brings these related styles together.

The Detail Isn’t Always Obvious in Photographs

This is something we regularly notice with Zippo lighters.

A photograph doesn’t always do the lighter justice.

Many Zippo designs use metallic finishes, textures, engraving, raised details and other decorative techniques.

Those details react to light as you move the lighter.

A photograph captures the product from one angle at one moment. Pick the actual lighter up and you may notice depth and details that simply weren’t obvious on screen.

It’s particularly noticeable with darker and more elaborate designs.

Are Gothic Zippo Lighters Collectible?

Absolutely – although there’s no rule saying you have to be a serious collector to own one.

One of the great things about collecting Zippos is that you can build a collection around almost anything.

Some collectors concentrate on a particular period. Others collect certain finishes. Then you have collectors who choose a subject such as skulls, wolves, dragons or fantasy artwork.

Collectors looking for something less common may also want to browse our Rare Zippos, Hard to Find Zippos and Limited Edition Zippo Lighters collections.

There’s no correct way to collect Zippos.

Buy the designs you genuinely like – that’s part of the enjoyment.

The Zippo Underneath the Artwork

With all the attention given to the designs, it’s easy to forget what’s underneath them.

It’s still a Zippo.

Zippo’s famous windproof lighter dates back to 1932, and the basic shape has become instantly recognisable around the world.

Open the lid and you get that familiar Zippo action.

Inside sits the traditional refillable windproof lighter mechanism.

Fuel can be replenished, while consumable parts such as the flint and wick can be replaced when required.

You can even change the way some Zippo cases work by using a different insert. If you’re interested in the options, our complete guide to Zippo lighter inserts explains the traditional petrol, butane and alternative genuine Zippo inserts.

Can You Engrave a Gothic Zippo?

In many cases, yes.

At Dancing Flame, we offer an in-house engraving service on many of our Zippo lighters.

Obviously, Gothic and Fantasy Zippos can already have quite elaborate artwork. That doesn’t necessarily mean they can’t be personalised.

A lighter with factory-produced artwork on the front may still have space on the reverse for a name, date or message.

Depending on the particular Zippo, engraving options can include the front lid, front body, back lid and back body.

You can find out much more in our Engraved Zippo Lighters – Everything You Need to Know guide.

If personalisation is particularly important, you can also browse our Engravable Zippo Lighters collection to find models suitable for adding your own message.

Gothic Zippos Make Brilliant Gifts

Buying for someone who’s into Gothic culture, dragons, skulls, fantasy, motorcycles or rock music can sometimes be surprisingly difficult.

A Zippo gives you something that is both practical and collectible.

Rather than buying a generic present, you can choose artwork that actually reflects the person receiving it.

Then, where engraving is available, you can make it even more personal.

A name, important date or short message can turn an already distinctive lighter into something unique to its owner.

That makes these Zippos worth considering for birthdays, Christmas, Father’s Day, anniversaries and other special occasions.
